Charles David Beatty, 79, of Morton, Illinois, passed away on March 13, 2026, at Jenn and Brian’s home, surrounded by the family he spent his life protecting.

Born in Chicago on May 7, 1946, Charlie was the son of Charles Robert Beatty and Dorothy Wichert. On November 13, 1971, he married the love of his life, Jean Torgerson, in Wausau, Wisconsin. Their 54-year journey together was defined by faith, family, and a shared sense of adventure.

A Life of Service

A patriot at his core, Charlie graduated from high school in 1964 and soon after answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army. A veteran of the Vietnam War (’67–’68), his skill and composure in the air led to a distinguished career as an Army helicopter instructor pilot. He didn’t just fly; he shaped the next generation of aviators with the same discipline and heart he brought to every facet of his life.

Following his original discharge from the Army in Germany, Charlie spent several months roaming Europe with his future bride, Jean. Upon returning to the Wausau, Wisconsin area, he spent several years working at Drott Manufacturing. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for woodworking and established himself as a talented "fix-it guy," even serving a short stint as a game warden.

Eventually, Charlie joined the National Guard and moved his family to the Madison area to pursue a full-time opportunity. He would go on to complete his distinguished military career there with the 147th Aviation Regiment.

Faith and Fellowship

Upon retiring from the military, Charlie’s mission shifted from the cockpit to the community. A devoted member of Living Waters Church, he was a pillar of the congregation, leading various groups including the Men’s Group [Men of Fire] and the unique "Firearms & Fellowship" gatherings. He held a special place in his heart for the youth, serving as a mentor and guiding them with wisdom and a steady hand…and always that Chuck-style humor that made so many of them feel at home and wonderfully accepted, around him.

The Storyteller

While many knew him for his service, everyone knew him for his voice and his hugs. Charlie was a natural comedian and a master storyteller who could command a room with ease. Whether he was acting a part in a play for VBS or roasting the guests of honor at anniversaries or military retirements, he had a gift for finding the humor in life and sharing it with others.

Family and Legacy

He is survived by his wife, Jean; his daughter, Jennifer Sorbe; his son, Charles R Beatty; his sister, Diane Liernam; and his brother, Dennis Beatty. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren,Madeline Beatty, Ryan Beatty, Jonathan Beatty, Blake Beatty, Anna Beatty, Payeton Schnell, Sidney Pygman, August Sorbe, Owen Sorbe, and several beloved cousins, nieces and nephews

Chuck (Charlie) loved big. A child at heart who kept no record of wrong, he made an unforgettable impression everywhere he went. For so many whose own fathers left a void, Chuck stepped in to fill that empty space. He had a way of making people feel important, seen, and truly loved. While others might shun the forgotten, Chuck met them with a warm embrace and words of faith he believed to his core.

He was a man of bold prayer, often calling on angelic armies to surround and protect those in need. Whether in the cockpit or the community, Chuck was an elite soldier for the King of Kings. An exceptional helicopter pilot and a war hero, he brought that same spirit of service and protection to his role as a mentor, a father, and a "fun-loving" grandpa.

Dad, you shared the love of Jesus with everyone you met, and so many credit you for changing their lives for the better. All glory to God for the light He shone through you. Thank you for a life well-lived. We salute you!
