Obituary

Gary E. McBride, 81, Washington passed away on May 29, 2026 in Peoria at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice. He was born to Everett and Lucylle (Johnson) McBride on July 22, 1944 in Peoria, IL. He married Cheryl Mustard on May 13, 1972 in Peoria, IL.

Gary was an avid golfer. He would often play 4-5 times per week with his “dime boys” and on weekends with his wife of 55 years, Cheryl. Gary was a fan of Las Vegas Raiders football and Los Angeles Dodgers baseball. He loved to bowl and was inducted into the Peoria Rivercity Bowling Association Hall of Fame. When he could no longer participate in the game he loved to watch his children, grandchildren and all of their friends bowl. After he retired from the USPS he became a full time house husband and super grandpa. He could almost always be found outdoors, working on a project, doing something for his wife, children or his grandchildren. He greatly enjoyed his garden, canning, making new recipes, grilling and sharing his creations with people. His family was always the most important thing and his grandchildren and grand-dogs took up the majority of his time after retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his children, Richard (Michelle) McBride; Kelly McBride Ford; Micheal (Andrea) McBride; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother George and foster daughter Carol Royer Odeneal. Any donations or memorials to Gary can be made to the American Red Cross. Gary was a supporter of this organization and had donated blood for over 30 years. The American Red Cross was also instrumental in helping Gary and Cheryl after the Washington tornado.
