John Scott Johnston

John Scott Johnston, 60, of rural Tremont died September 1, 2025 at his home. He was born January 20, 1965 in Peoria, IL to Johnie and Nelta Faye (Miller) Johnston.

John graduated from Dee-Mack High School in 1983. After high school he entered the Marines and was active for four years. He was stationed at Camp Pendelton, CA and in Okinawa, Japan.

John was self-employed most of his life, working as a carpenter. He was hired at IDOT in 2018, and truly enjoyed working with the many great people at the El Paso facility.

John was active with marine corps groups. He also became a blacksmith in more recent years, crafting some beautiful projects for family and friends. He loved working with his hands and always had many projects he was working on. John loved the outdoors and hunting whenever he had the chance. John enjoyed good conversation with friends and family and would drop everything to help someone in need. He especially enjoyed spending time with his daughter; going to car shows together was a favorite.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Gary Allen Johnston. Surviving are his daughter, Kazaria of Lacon; brothers Raymond (Jan) Johnston of Fort Smith AR, Richard (Marilyn) Johnston of Greenwood, IN, & Alan (Tina) Johnston of Tremont; and sisters Jo Ann Johnston & Roxanna Abernathy, both of West Plains, MO. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as several great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, 325 E. Queenwood, Morton, IL on October 4, with a visitation from 1-2 and an informal service from 2-3. Memorial contributions can be made to the Peoria Honor Flight. Cards can be sent from and condolences left at illinicremation.com
